Is a maverick a good thing?

So John McCain purports to be a maverick. What exactly is a maverick? Merriam-Webster defines a maverick as, “an independent individual who does not go along with a group or party.”

If that is a maverick, then I’m not sure that a maverick is such a good quality for a President to possess. Afterall we want a president who will lead us. A leader is someone who guides us, who helps us achieve our ultimate goal. How can someone lead when he is off doing his own thing? He can’t, and John McCain won’t. John McCain wants to be a maverick and the thought of a loose cannon in the White House in these trying times quite frankly frightens me.

A leader makes tough decisions but a leader benefits from the input of those he leads rather than viewing them as a hindrance.  A self proclaimed maverick isn’t really a good thing.  It just means that you are difficult to work with.
